Epinephelus cruentatus

Identifiers: Three to five spots at base of dorsal fin. Tail is rounded. Light red brown to gray, with dark orange brown spots all over body. Can change color, lightening and darkening. Juvenile: White stripe that runs between the eyes to the lower lip. May have a yellowish wash over body.

Habitat: Coral reefs with caves and ledges. Blends in with surroundings. Western Atlantic Oceans from North Carolina to Florida, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
